Before the Gold: Erica Wiebe and Canada's Historic Rio 2016 Wrestling Victory
An unexpected path to Olympic gold, a memorable moment for Canadian wrestling, and a story our team had been following long before the Games.

On August 18, 2016, Erica Wiebe gave Canadian wrestling a moment to remember. Competing in her first Olympic Games, she defeated Kazakhstan's Guzel Manyurova 6–0 in the women's 75 kg freestyle final, bringing Canada its first Olympic wrestling gold since Carol Huynh's victory at Beijing 2008.
It was a remarkable achievement for an athlete who had never stood on a senior World Championship podium.
An Unexpected Road to Gold
Heading into Rio, much of the attention in the heavyweight division was on Adeline Gray of the United States. A three-time world champion at the time, Gray was widely considered a favourite for Olympic gold.
She was also a familiar rival for Wiebe. Earlier in 2016, the two had met in the final of the Olympic Test Event in Rio, where Gray defeated the Canadian 7–4.
But the Olympic tournament unfolded differently.
A historic moment from the final seconds of the women’s 75 kg freestyle final at Rio 2016. Canada’s Erica Wiebe faces Kazakhstan’s Guzel Manyurova on her way to a 6–0 victory, securing Canada’s first Olympic wrestling gold since 2008. It would remain Wiebe’s only Olympic medal and the greatest achievement of a career that never included a senior World Championship title.
Gray lost in the quarterfinals to Belarusian wrestler Vasilisa Marzaliuk, ending the possibility of another meeting between the two rivals.
Wiebe, meanwhile, defeated Germany's Maria Selmaier and China's Zhang Fengliu before facing Marzaliuk in the semifinals. A 3–0 victory sent her into the Olympic final.
Waiting there was Guzel Manyurova, a two-time Olympic medallist with years of international experience.
Wiebe controlled the final, scoring in both periods to secure a 6–0 victory and her place in Canadian Olympic history.

We Followed Her Story Before the Gold
For our team, Wiebe's Olympic victory brought new meaning to conversations recorded before Rio.
In 2015, we interviewed Wiebe about her wrestling journey, her motivation and the challenges of pursuing success at the international level. At that point, an Olympic gold medal was still a goal rather than an achievement.
We also featured Wiebe in our April 2016 podcast coverage connected to the Team Canada Collection for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.
Those recordings are an important part of our Canadian wrestling journalism archive. They offer a chance to hear from Wiebe before the Olympic title changed the way her career would be remembered and is a reminder of why we follow athletes before they reach the podium. The result may make history, but the story begins much earlier.

Wiebe's gold was also part of a longer Canadian tradition in women's wrestling, following the Olympic achievements of Carol Huynh and Tonya Verbeek.
