Not every contribution to wrestling happens on the competition mat.
Across Canada, independent initiatives are helping the sport grow in new ways. While athletes compete, coaches teach, and volunteers build local clubs, others are finding creative ways to document wrestling and preserve its moments for future generations.
One of those initiatives is North Wrestle, which has been selected to compete in the 2026 Pow Wow Pitch People's Choice Award.
Founded by Indigenous wrestler Cole Sanderson, North Wrestle is dedicated to raising the standard of how wrestling is documented in Canada. Working alongside a team of volunteers, Sanderson has invested time and creativity into producing professional visual coverage that captures the intensity, athleticism, and atmosphere of the sport.
For many years, independent coverage of Canadian wrestling was limited. Outside of major events, competition footage often consisted of single-camera recordings archived online with little attention to production quality or the overall experience of the viewer. While those recordings remain valuable, they rarely captured the excitement and energy that make wrestling such a compelling sport to watch.
North Wrestle is helping change that.
Through thoughtful filming, creative production, and a commitment to documenting wrestling at every level, the project offers athletes, clubs, and communities a richer visual record of the sport. Their work not only showcases competition but also helps preserve important moments in Canadian wrestling while making the sport more engaging and accessible to new audiences.
Projects like North Wrestle demonstrate that strengthening wrestling extends beyond coaching and competition. Documenting the sport, preserving its history, and presenting it in ways that inspire future athletes are equally valuable contributions to the wrestling community.
North Wrestle is now competing in the 2026 Pow Wow Pitch People's Choice Award, where public voting will help determine which projects advance to the Grand Finale.
