Dylan Williams: Growing the Sport Beyond the Mat

🎙️ Voice of the Podium

Before becoming one of Canada's leading Greco-Roman wrestlers and representing the country at the 2015 World Championships, Dylan Williams was already thinking beyond his own athletic career.

In this conversation with Wrestling Podium Radio, Williams reflects on the path that led him to Greco-Roman wrestling, the perseverance required to stay committed to a demanding discipline, and the values that kept him motivated throughout his journey.

Beyond competition, he speaks about the role he played as a University of Alberta student in supporting local wrestling, encouraging young athletes to stay involved in the sport, and helping build a stronger wrestling community.

The conversation also explores one of the defining characteristics of Canadian wrestling: its long-standing commitment to gender equality. Williams discusses Canada's training environment, where women and men have traditionally trained together, and contrasts that experience with what he observed elsewhere in North America. His reflections highlight how inclusive training environments can strengthen both athletes and the sport itself.

More than a conversation with a national champion, this interview offers insight into leadership, mentorship, and the responsibility athletes have in helping wrestling grow beyond their own competitive careers.
