Agustín Destribats Stuns the Field to Claim Pan-American Gold at 65 kg
Agustín Destribats celebrates after winning 65kg gold at the 2025 Pan-American Wrestling Championships in Monterrey.
Monterrey, Mexico – May 11, 2025
In a turn of events that few predicted, Argentina’s Agustín Destribats claimed the 65 kg freestyle title at the 2025 Pan-American Wrestling Championships, toppling expectations and making a bold statement on the continental stage.
Heading into the tournament, most eyes were on Joseph McKenna of the United States, a seasoned and technically sharp wrestler known for his pace and positioning. McKenna started strong with an 11-0 technical fall over Amirmohammad Biabani of Canada in the quarterfinals—a dominant and somewhat surprising result given Biabani's past international performances.
But while McKenna was cruising early, Destribats was building momentum.
The 27-year-old Argentine, already a fan-favorite in South America, brought a fiery mix of confidence, unorthodox style, and raw determination to the mat. He navigated the bracket with poise, culminating in a championship performance that showcased his tenacity and tactical awareness.
Destribats is no stranger to big moments. He made history at the 2020 Pan-American Olympic Qualifier, becoming the first Argentine male wrestler to qualify for the Olympics in freestyle since 1996. His aggressive hand-fighting and ability to wrestle from unconventional positions have earned him a reputation as both unpredictable and dangerous.
Despite competing from a region with limited wrestling infrastructure compared to North America or Europe, Destribats has trained internationally and absorbed styles from around the globe. His work with Cuban coaches and stints in the U.S. have added layers to his game.
Yesterday’s victory is not just a personal triumph for Destribats—it’s a statement for South American wrestling. With this win, he positions himself not just as a continental powerhouse but as a legitimate threat for the World Championships and beyond.
